Common Silence, The 8th Annual Zine and Photo Book Fair

Mauricio Marcin invokes the utopian notion of printed matter’s ability to enact social change through small-scale action to generate micro-policies. Through his selection of works, curator Marcin questions how the gesture of fixing a word or image on paper has the potential to incite social change. In the last decade there has been a tremendous influx in self publishing throughout Latin America, particularly in Mexico. This is largely a result of artists utilizing independent publishing as a political and artistic platform for direct communications; thus allowing the self-published book, fanzine, and maquettes to function outside of commercial intermediaries and institutional entities and empowering artistic content to transcend traditional forms of production and dissemination.
